TaylorMade Qi Irons — Graphite Shaft

Built to go straight. Not built to forgive a right miss and call it game improvement.

Most game-improvement irons quietly favour a fade. TaylorMade's stated design brief for the Qi was the opposite: engineered for straight distance, which means the forgiveness works in the right direction.

    Why It Works

    • Cap Back Design: Combines a hollow body (for speed and forgiveness) with a cavity back (for feel and control). The result is an iron that performs like a players club from the inside but plays like a game-improvement iron from the outside. HYBRAR Echo Dampers sit within the construction to kill unwanted vibration without deadening feedback.
    • FLTD CG (Floating CG): Centre of gravity sits at its lowest in the long irons, then rises progressively through the set into the short irons. Long irons launch easier. Short irons give you more control. The set works as a system rather than the same head at different lofts.
    • Speed Pocket: Flexible slot behind the face protects ball speed on low strikes, where most amateurs lose distance. Particularly effective in the longer irons.
    • Organic face geometries per head: Each iron head is tuned individually, not scaled uniformly. Distance gapping stays consistent because each head is optimised for its own role, not adapted from a template.

Graphite vs Steel — Which Should You Choose?

      Graphite (This Set) Steel
    Shaft Weight Lighter Heavier
Swing Speed Benefit More speed from same effort Suits faster swing speeds
Feel and Feedback Softer, more dampened More direct feedback
Fatigue Over 18 Holes Less Slightly more
Best For Moderate/slower swing speeds, seniors Faster swing speeds, stronger ball strikers

Graphite is the right call if swing speed is a limiting factor in your distance, or if you play frequently and want to reduce cumulative fatigue through the irons. The Qi head performs identically regardless of shaft material, so you're not compromising on iron technology by choosing graphite.

    Who It's For

Mid-handicappers with moderate to slower swing speeds who want genuine forgiveness without the ballooning, right-leaning miss that comes with most game-improvement irons. Also suits seniors transitioning from steel who want to retain the Qi's performance while gaining the swing speed benefits of a lighter shaft.

    One Thing Worth Knowing

Graphite shafts in irons are lighter than steel, which suits moderate swing speeds well but can feel less controlled for faster swingers who rely on shaft weight for tempo. If you're between shaft materials and generating above-average swing speed, the steel version is worth considering. If you're unsure, a fitting will confirm which better matches your swing.
